Lost, not lost cause

Have you ever felt that you have no idea where to go from where you were at life? Have you ever felt lost? So overwhelmed by choices that you couldn't decide or left with seemingly no choice? You are not alone. Feeling uncertain about what to do or if you chose the right path doesn't make you a lost cause. It might feel like the worst possible way to be, but sometimes lost is exactly what you need to be to find out which is 'your way'.
I had multiple times in my life when feeling lost lead me to great discoveries, but let me tell you about how I turned one incident around. About two years ago, I got a really big punch in the face from life and it left me wondering who I am, what I want and where I am heading. When I felt the most lost, I have decided that it was time to just let go of everything that WAS and focus on what IS.

I had a tough look at my friendships, my clothes, my habits and my personality and I decided all needs upgrading. I let go of friendships that only dragged me down, clothes that served me no longer (bye best ever ballet flats - now with holes everywhere edition) and reflected on who I want to be. I picked up new hobbies, met people and kept an open mind. I found my humour again (it was under the bed, next to the monsters) and I started to feel better. It would be a lie to say everything was magically fixed, but I am grateful for being lost that time. It forced me to reflect on who I was and made me realise I am on the wrong path. But about that, maybe another time.
So what can you learn from my experience? Well, first of all, when everything falls apart, you can put things together how you want to. It forces you to sort out matters you've been postponing, to face your demons (to ask for rent of course) and it is a perfect time to start new things. It might be a terrifying journey and you might find (like I did) that you are actually not who you thought you are. However, I can promise you, if you fight this battle, nothing will scare you anymore. You can fall and pick yourself up again and again, if you need to.
Don't feel ashamed to ask for help and take your time. Write a list or keep a diary if you want a record. When you feel like you are taking two steps backwards, remember where you want to be and let your mind take you there. Finally, it is okay not to know things and not to have everything figured out. There is probably nothing more human than not knowing. (For example, I have no idea where my grey sock went.)
If you still have your worries, here is a mantra for you:
"I am an idealist. I don't know where I am going, but I'm on my way." /Carl Sandburg/
